Become a Kindness Courier: Support Women Scholarship Recipients in Southwest Washington
Want to change a college student's entire week—with just a few words?
Woman of Wonder, a Vancouver, WA-based 501(c)(3), funds college scholarships for women throughout Southwest Washington—including single mothers, women raised by single parents, and women pursuing education on their own. And here's where you come in: we're looking for Kindness Couriers to cheer them on through the ups, downs, and "why did I sign up for 8 a.m. classes?" moments of college life.
What Is a Kindness Courier?
A Kindness Courier is a volunteer who sends monthly encouragement to women scholarship recipients in Clark County and surrounding communities. Think of yourself as a personal cheerleader who works entirely from home—no commute required, slippers totally optional.
Your mission? Be the bright spot in a college student's day through handwritten cards, quick notes, postcards, or monthly emails.
What you'll do as a volunteer
Send one monthly message to a woman pursuing higher education in Southwest Washington. That might look like:
A "You've totally got this!" text or card before finals week
Celebrating when she aces that impossible organic chemistry exam (or survives it with a passing grade—equally worthy of confetti)
Sharing a story from your own college days (yes, even the embarrassing ones about surviving on ramen and determination)
Reminding her she's capable of amazing things—especially on the hard days when financial stress, parenting responsibilities, or self-doubt creep in
Think encouragement with a side of humor. The kind of message that makes someone smile, take a deep breath, relax, and keep going.
Your Extended Role
You'll also:
Stay in touch with Woman of Wonder staff to share student updates or identify when additional resources might help
Celebrate wins with us (because every small victory deserves recognition)
Help remind students about important deadlines, including their required end-of-the-year check-in
Share the exciting news when they're eligible to reapply for scholarships for the next academic year
The Perks of Being a Kindness Courier
Work from anywhere: Your couch. Your kitchen table. That cozy reading chair you love in Vancouver, Camas, or Longview. Your most strenuous commute? A stroll to the mailbox.
Flexible commitment: One message per month. That's about 15-20 minutes of your time to make a real difference in a woman's educational journey.
Low pressure, high impact: No counseling degree required. No college degree required. Just genuine kindness and a willingness to connect with women in your Southwest Washington community.
Tax-deductible giving alternative: While this is a volunteer position, your investment of time supports our 501(c)(3) mission of empowering women through education—and it's deeply rewarding in ways money can't measure.
Who we're looking for in Clark County & beyond
People who love to write. People who remember what it felt like to crave encouragement (especially if you've been a single parent juggling coursework, or financed your own education). People who believe a few thoughtful words can change someone's day, their semester, their trajectory.
We're especially looking for volunteers who understand the unique challenges facing:
Single mothers returning to college
Women who were raised by single parents and are forging their own path
Women pursuing education independently without family financial support
Adult learners balancing work, family, and classroom responsibilities
If that sounds like you, we'd love to have you join our crew of Kindness Couriers.
Why this volunteer opportunity matters
Since 2018, Woman of Wonder has awarded over 50 scholarships to women right here in Southwest Washington. These aren't just statistics—they're nurses, teachers, business owners, and community leaders who are transforming Clark County and surrounding areas.
But here's what we've learned: financial support is only part of the equation.
Many of our scholarship recipients are navigating college while:
Raising children as single mothers
Working full-time or multiple part-time jobs
Managing financial stress without family safety nets
Questioning whether they really belong in higher education
Your monthly message becomes the emotional scholarship they didn't know they needed. It's proof that someone in their community believes in them—on the days when they're not sure they believe in themselves.
The impact of encouragement (it's bigger than you think)
Research shows that students with regular encouragement and mentorship are significantly more likely to persist through challenges and complete their degrees. For women pursuing education later in life or while managing single parenthood, that support network can be the difference between finishing and dropping out.
That's powerful, and you can be part of it with an investment of 15 minutes a month.

Frequently asked questions about becoming a Kindness Courier
Do I need to live in Clark County to volunteer? No! While Woman of Wonder serves Southwest Washington scholarship recipients, Kindness Couriers can volunteer from anywhere. You'll be supporting local women's education from wherever you call home.
What if I've never been to college myself? Perfect! Your encouragement is valuable regardless of your educational background. What matters is your ability to write supportive, genuine messages that lift someone's spirits.
Can I volunteer if I don't have much free time? Absolutely. We designed this volunteer opportunity specifically for busy people. One 15-20 minute message per month—that's it. No meetings, no training sessions, no complicated scheduling.
Will I meet the student I'm supporting? Privacy is important, so we keep identities confidential unless both parties prefer to connect more directly. You'll know you're supporting a real woman in Southwest Washington pursuing higher education—that's what matters.
Is there a minimum commitment? We ask Kindness Couriers to commit to at least one academic year (approximately 9-10 months) to provide consistency for scholarship recipients. But life happens—we understand and can always reassign if needed.
